Going all natural is inspiring to me! I don’t need to read any ingredients or to fear I am putting poison in mine and my beloved’s mouth. And it comes with a lot of room for experiments and inspiration. I didn’t go crazy on making very many colors this year as it is only 3 of us for Easter and I colored the eggs mostly for feeling the festivity and keeping up with the tradition. Eggs are to be colored on Thursday before Easter. So here is what my alchemy turned out:
The recipe:
Use 1 cup of water. Add the dye. Bring to boil, then reduce the heat and steep for 20-30 min. Strain the liquid into the coloring container. Let it cool to room temperature. Add 1 Tbsp of vinegar. Add the eggs and let them be in the container overnight.
Blue color – 1 C of shredded red cabbage
Red/purple color – 1 C of grated beets
Yellow color – 1.5 Tbsp of ground turmeric powder. I assume you can use fresh turmeric too but I used powder
Green color – color the eggs yellow and then put them into the “blue” mixture (or vice versa)
For the brown color I used 1 C cranberry juice (store bought) and 1 Tbsp vinegar. I did not boil the mixture.
On the following morning, take the eggs out of the container, let them dry and oil them with any vegetable oil using a paper towel.
